A universal remote control for the PlayStation 4 will be available this October from Performance Designed Products, a representative for the company confirmed to Polygon today.
PDP's Universal Media Remote for PS4 was leaked recently via Amazon and GameStop. Both stores list the Bluetooth-based remote for $29.99, which the PDP spokesperson confirmed will be the retail price. The rep also noted that the Universal Media Remote is a peripheral that's officially licensed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It will be available in the second half of October, according to the spokesperson.
As a universal remote, the unit can control up to four devices: a PS4, television, set-top box and audio receiver. The remote also includes the PS4's power, PlayStation, Options and Share buttons, giving users full control of the system without a DualShock 4. There do not appear to be any illuminated buttons on the remote.
The PlayStation 4 can play Blu-ray Discs just like its predecessor, as well as — thanks to a new app— a variety of media files. But unlike the PlayStation 3, the PS4 doesn't yet have an official remote control, so you pretty much need a DualShock 4 to control playback of Blu-rays and other media. (Some televisions' remotes can be used with the PS4 via the HDMI-CEC protocol. Logitech added PS4 support to its Harmony remotes last month, but they can't control the console's power.)
Bare-bones PS4 remotes have been available from companies such as Insignia, Best Buy's in-house brand. However, PDP's Universal Media Remote seems to be the first such device that is officially licensed by Sony and as full-featured as Sony's own PS3 media remote.
